Opened in October 2003, the Federal Aviation Administration installed a 181- foot state-of-the-art control tower for Paine Field in Everett, which eliminated the line-of-sight problems for controllers. The Instrument Landing System, the tower and other improvements make this an ideal and safe location for a new commercial airport. The new Air Traffic Control Tower (ATCT) at Paine Field has a 400 square foot cab sitting atop a 162 foot pedestal. The tower is used primarily for Boeing test flights; although it was pressed into passenger service after the Nisqually earthquake damaged the SeaTac ATCT in 2001. Eleven air traffic control personnel utilize the tower on a typical 14 hour day.
