Part of Vulcan’s largest and most active project – the redevelopment of the South Lake Union neighborhood – Block 44 adds a five- and six-story office building, totaling 580,500-sf, 375,500-sf of which contribute to Amazon’s ongoing global headquarters expansion nicknamed Blackfoot and Nessie (Amazon Phase 6). The two buildings are connected by a glass canopy featuring a Spencer Finch art installation, which covers a public crossblock with water features, outdoor seating and landscaping. Phase VI also features 18,000 square feet of ground-level retail space. Block 44 utilized a unique dewatering system to meet the challenge of excavation near the water table. The enterprising system not only removed water but also provided near- and long-term stability, creating a cost-effective sustainable solution for handling, disposal and recycling of water.
